National Map Federal Lands

Federal Lands are any land other than tribal lands that are controlled or owned by the United States, including lands selected by, but not yet conveyed to, Alaska Native Corporations and groups organized pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. This layer is downloaded from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

DEMOGRAPHIC INDEX

The Demographic Index is an average of these two indicators:
  • Percent Low-Income: The percent of a Census blocks group's population in households where the household income is less than or equal to twice the federal "poverty level".
  • Percent People of Color: The percent of individuals in a Census block group who list their racial status as a race other than white alone and/or list their ethnicity as Hispanic or Latino. That is, all people other than non-Hispanic white-alone individuals. The word "alone" in this case indicates that the person is of a single race, not multiracial.

A Census block group is an area defined by the Census Bureau that usually has in the range of 600-3,000 people living in it. The US is divided into more than 200,000 block groups.

If you click on a Census block group on the map, you will see "X% (Y%ile)". This means that for the selected Census block group, the average of the percent low-income and percent people of color indicators corresponds to X% of the population in that Census block group. Additionally, compared to all other Census block groups in the U.S., Y% of Census block groups have an equal or lower demographic index value.
